On Saturday 27 February 2010 there was a strong earthquake occurred at 3:34:17 pm ( UTC-3 ), which reached a magnitude of 8.8 M Wby the U.S. Geological Survey . September This earthquake , next to the tsunami, caused extensive damage in peripheral sectors and localities of the district, especially in the port, the center, at the Naval Base in El Arenal , in Caleta El Morro, and the Salinas area Caleta Tumbes .
