History

Before the Conquest

Talcahuano, before the conquest of Chile , was part of the lands of Arauco , inhabited by Mapuche , which like in most of the South, opposed fierce resistance to Spanish rule, a conflict that lasted about five centuries.

Among the natives who inhabited the coast in Tumbes Peninsula, was Talcahueu (castellanizacin of Mapudungun Tralcam Wenu) who was a great warrior who led his armies as a true strategist. Even in the book testifies Alonso de Ercilla , La Araucana (verse 315):

Step after this then the warrior Talcahuano, that encircles the sea and its beautiful land surrounding a thick pole on the right hand.

The Colony

When consolidated the Spanish crown, was the Governor Alonso de Ribera who, realizing the potential of the port, joined the two bays for easy navigation, in April 1601. It was founded on November 5 of 1764 by order of Governor Antonio de Guill y Gonzaga , being declared "Port of Registry Surgidero and Ship Berth." So, in the mid-eighteenth century, rose strong and Galvez St. Augustine, and its harbor was converted into a naval base for the Spanish, as it is today for Chileans.

Independence

The Bay of Talcahuano in 1846 . Work of French Louis Le Breton (1818-1866).

It was the scene of bloody (and ignored) battles for the independence of Chile, as the Site and assault of Talcahuano , bloody battle between rows patriots had to Colonel Jorge Beauchef , hero of the capture of the forts of Valdivia.

According to one theory on the independence of Chile , the Declaration of Independence was drafted in the Cerro Perales Morrillo (Gaete from the current stadium). Another theory holds that the Declaration of Independence was drafted on the mound Perales (against Valley San Eugenio, belonging to the same district), in both cases it is said that the act was proclaimed in the main square of Concepcin
