The commune has a climate of steppe with very dry air as much of the interior of the IV Region of Coquimbo .  climatic situation where it is perceived and oceanic influence winter precipitation are sufficient to remove the features desert, extending across the transverse extension to the border with Argentina .

Its main feature is the mostly clear skies, low humidity, high temperatures during the day because it occupies an area in or on the layer inversion , although the night temperatures drop considerably. It has a daily temperature range of about 18 � to 20 � C, which is twice or three times the coast.

This area has been tremendously affected by the phenomenon of El Ni�o during the years 1984 and 1997 , the latter has left large margins of precipitation rarely seen at the site, with the occurrence of temporary central Chile in 1997 .

During the winter you can see the local wind called Terral which is in the form of bursts East West 15 to 20 knots. Its main feature is the temperature, usually 10 � C higher than the temperature.
