Punta de Mata regarded as the second capital of the state Monagas and capital of the municipality of Ezequiel Zamora , in the same State. It has a population of 102,000 inhabitants, making it the largest population center in the state after Maturin .
The city was created from oil exploration in the area, and currently that is the basis of its economy. In the last ten years has been a population explosion of this industry, and Ezequiel Zamora municipality has grown from 22,764 residents in 1990 to 52,122 in 2001 and 2011 are estimated at 92,000 inhabitants.
