The territory was originally inhabited by an indigenous group called the Embera Chami, who still have their representation in our town. The first settlers were Antioquia, Caldas and vallunos. In the town of San José del Palmar there was a mixing of populations: the first inhabitants were indigenous Embera Chami group, before the colonization process that led to its founding, there were already Ingará the banks of the river in the town of Valencia, Black people from the San Juan River Basin, and later settled in the territory settlers from other regions of the country, mainly in the departments
