The town lies just north of the Arctic Circle where the midnight sun is visible from 2 June to 10 July. Due to atmospheric refraction, there is no true polar night in Bod, but because of the mountains south of Bod, the sun is not visible from the city from early December to early January. Average number of sunhours in Bod is highest in June with 221 hours.

The strongest tidal current in the world, with water speeds reaching 22 knots (41 km/h; 25 mph), is Saltstraumen, situated about 30 kilometres (19 mi) southeast of Bod. Kjerringy is a well preserved old trading village on the coast about 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of Bod.
