Culture of Mostaganem

core Tigdit Mostaganem located outside the city walls. It houses old mosques and shrines including the Maâzouz Sidi al-Bahri, a mystical Berber the XII   century  . The name "Tigdit" cited as the first toponym Mostaganem, comes from the Berber word for "pit" of ('igdi', 'ijdi'), Berber name from the sand  .

The district Tobbana (in Turkish Hana Top "battery") was the Turkish quarter of the city. It is located north of the current site of 1  -November-1954. It is in this area that was willing battery which monitored port  .

The neighborhood of Derb is one of the oldest districts of the city, built on a rocky hill overlooking the ravine Ain Sefra. The area is a transition zone between the modern and the ancient suburb of Tigdit. It contained all the institutions and other living arrangements where communities lived in harmony Jewish , Arab , Turkish and kouloughlis . It houses the synagogue and one of the oldest mosque of the city, built in 1340-1341 by Abu El Hassan . The area has been deeply degraded during the French colonization and since the country's independence  .

The district Matemore north of this area lies the door Medjaher near the park 20-Aug, built in 1964.

A regional museum is under construction in the town of Kharouba, this museum aims to preserve and keep the archaeological and art reflecting different historical periods of the country's western region  .
