In the Easter of 1979 get the second insurrection against the Somoza regime, a column of the FSLN enters the city on Sunday April 8 under the command of Francisco Rivera (The Fox) and his lieutenant, Juan Alberto Blandon (Froylan) . The occupation lasts until the day on April 13 when the army of the dictator around the city with more than 2,000 men and abundant war material which includes aviation , in these battles Blandon lose his life. The withdrawal had the collaboration of more than a thousand estelianos, men, women, and children left quietly in the company of guerrillas the unwavering EstelĂ­.

The city bombed by Somoza's Guard, ended up being called " The American Guernica ". In those bombings, the city lost its City Hall, the historic Teatro Montenegro, the Worker's Club, the Red Cross and other buildings that had adorned the city for decades. More than five thousand people died during the war in EstelĂ­. In July of 1979 to produce the victory of the revolution , 16 the city was taken by the troops libertarian and the 19th of that month is defeated dictatorship.
