Peque is a name that evokes the early days of Spanish colonialism in Antioquia. Originally, the name "Peque" is Aboriginal in the region where the current town is. It is a name of Indian origin. All an indigenous ethnic group was named, Peques, tribe of the family of Catíos. The Spanish conquistador Don Gaspar de Rodas, the third governor of the Province of Antioquia, had two children by a native Indian Pequese call this territory. One of them came to be known captain of the Spanish armies, Alonso Rhodes, and the other was her sister Mary.
