In December 2010 Gramalote suffers a natural disaster, the result of a strong winter season in Colombia and whose geological causes have not yet been precisely determined. Apparently, the fault line on which was the county seat, emphasized his motion in part by the destabilization of the ground caused by the rains. This movement originated slip one of the hills of the west, which covered several houses. The same fault quake also affected the foundations of buildings from December 16, which produced most of the buildings were completely or partially destroyed. This phenomenon continued and almost completely destroyed the town, leaving it completely uninhabitable. 

On 17 December 2010 the authorities gave the order to evacuate all residents.
