In pre-Hispanic times, the area was inhabited by the indigenous tribes and Ituango Nechí. In the mid- seventeenth century , the northern department began to be populated with its gold wealth. Although the town was not settled itself until 1827 , year in which the first settlers arrived from Yarumal settled.

The campamenteño territory was elevated to the status of parish in the municipality of Yarumal in 1830. Five years later the town was erected as a township by the then governor of Antioquia, Don Juan de Dios Aranzazu and segregating the resort
