Upon the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, the territory now occupied this district was inhabited, according to the chroniclers, by indigenous tribes of the Indian group Catíos belonging to a larger ethnic group they called Caribs .

The Catíos who inhabited the region at this time, were ruled by a legendary name precisely Buriticá Cacique, which is due in memory the name of the current municipality.
