The parish of Eidfjord was very special as it belonged to the bishop of Stavanger (and not the bishop of Bergen as all the other parishes of Hordaland) from 1125 to 1630. The reason for this was that the regions of Hallingdal and Valdres belonged to the bishop of Stavanger - and the easiest way to reach them was by sailing up the Hardangerfjord to Eidfjord, and then go over the mountains.
