In 1914 Sylvanus Morley conducted research in Ceibal for the Carnegie Institute of Washington .  Barnum Brown visited the ruins in 1948, and members of the Expedition Sacrificial Altar Peabody Museum visits conducted in 1961, 1962 and 1963.

In 1964, the Peabody Museum returned to the site to conduct a thorough investigation which lasted until 1968, and was directed byGordon R. Willey and A. Ledyard Smith as field director.  Other excavations were carried out between May and June 2006 by the Archaeological Project Ceibal-Petexbatún
