On arrival of the Spanish, the region with the Bank was populated by Indians Chimilas. In February 1747 the Spanish José Fernando de Mier y Guerra , reorganized the population and gave the name of Our Lady of Candelaria of The Bank. Township was erected by law 182 of 1871 Sovereign State of Magdalena .

In 1536 when Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada used the Magdalena River to explore the interior of the country, founded a town called Bearded because he found that it would mean a genetic curiosity: the
