Velázquez, who founded many settlements of what is now North Santander. Founded on November 6, 1829, when the Gran Colombia was just emerging from the campaign of liberation. The land where stands this town formed part of the territories inhabited by warring Chitareros and motionsIts founder was the bishop of Santa Marta Ruiz José María Estévez Cote, who later in 1830 gave the Holy Oils the liberator Simon BolivarBishop chose and appointed the places where the temple would be built, the rectory and the town hall, and then actively supported by Thomas Aquinas Bonet, José María Barranco Perez and Jose Solano (who is also considered founders), and others, demarcated perimeter streets, races and places. The birthplace of San José de Cote was known at the time as the "Llano del Tabacal". He belonged to the region called "Party of the Blood" of the providence of Santa Cruz de Mom pox.

As first mayor was appointed Mr. José María Pérez Solano, one of its founders, the rising population and started a frank development process.
