Legend has it that in 1812 Simon Bolivar first arrive at Campo de la Cruz, before taking care of the front of Barranca Nueva, opposite the Square "Ermita" delivered a fiery speech where he asked the help campocrucenses to curb the anarchy that reigned in the New Granada and convert the people in a free people. However there is no documentation to ratify such a story.

The municipality was created by Ordinance 34 of April 16, 1914 he and the town of St. Lucia was segregated. The boundaries of Campo de la Cruz of the municipalities of Candelaria, and Tubará Usiacurí are ratified by the No.52 of December 7, 1965 ordinance.

In December 2010 , the urban area of the town was flooded almost entirely due to the La Nina phenomenon which caused heavy rains across the country and breaking the highway retaining wall serves on the Canal Dam .
