Taichung has a warm humid subtropical climate , with an average annual temperature of 23.0 °C (73.4 °F), and average annual rainfall of just above 1,700 millimetres (67 in). The city sees an average humidity of 80%. Taichung has a milder climate than other major cities in Taiwan. Due to the protection provided by the Central Mountain Range to the east and the Miaoli hills to the north, Taichung is rarely severely affected by typhoons. However, occasional typhoons emerging from the South China Sea will pose a threat to the city as evidenced by Typhoon Wayne in 1986 which struck Taiwan from the west coast near Taichung
