The large municipality in the Aare valley rises from an elevation of 600 m (2,000 ft) on the valley floor to the Br�nig Pass at 1,375 m (4,511 ft) along the right side of the river. On the left side it stretches up into the Alps and reaches an elevation of 2,961 m (9,715 ft). It includes the village of Meiringen in the valley, the settlements of Sand, Stein, Eisenbolgen, Hausen, Balm, Unterbach and Unterheidon on the road to the Grimsel and Susten Passes, the village of Br�nigen in the Br�nig Pass and the hamlets of Prasti, Zaun and Wylerli on the slopes above the valley
