Kanpur is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It forms part of the Kanpur division. Kanpur is the district headquarters. It has been divided into two in lieu of the administration problem caused by the large population. The term Kanpur refers to the combination of Kanpur Nagar District and Kanpur Dehat District. In the year 1977, Kanpur was divided into Kanpur Nagar and Kanpur Dehat. They were united in the year 1979 but were again separated in the year 1981. Kanpur is the biggest city of the state. Many commercial and industrial activities take place here. It was referred to as Manchester of the city. It is now called the commercial capital of the state. National Highways 2 and 25 pass through this city. It is also situated on the main Delhi-Howrah railway trunk line. The district is situated on the banks of the River Ganga. Domestic flights are available for Kolkata and New Delhi from Kanpur Airport called Chakeri. The civilian air port Amausi is 70Km. away from Kanpur
