It originated as a village of indigenous Mocana at the time pre-Columbian. It was discovered by Pedro de Heredia on 19 March 1533 . San Luis Beltrán lived there until 1565. In 1661, according to the laws of Spain, the village and within 5 leagues around, were recognized as Indigenous Reservation.

It became a municipality by the Act 7th June 7, 1833. In 1886 as a result of the factual situations that were generated by the civil war last year, some people said that the Indians were gone and declared "well vacancy" field
