Tinjacá, formerly 'Tunjacá' and Chibcha language Juin-cha-ca, meaning "mansion for Prince chibcha 'is a village prior to the conquest of Colombia as that tribe was ruled by a cacique.

By the year 1539, the Spaniards began the appropriation of indigenous Tinjacá being great opponents of the process of looting.

Historically Tinjacá Foundation is recognized in the year of 1556 , parallel to the expansion of Catholicism . In 1660 Tinjacá acquires the status of municipality.
