Timana is one of the oldest villages of Colombia , colonized by the Spanish in December 1538, led by General Pedro de Añazco who also was a founder of many municipalities.

According to Herrera and Castilian chroniclers Fray Pedro Simon, the origin of the town of Timana corresponds to the existence in this area, of the tribe of Indians Timanaes ,Yalcones and Apiramas, under the command of the Chiefs Inando, Pionza, Añolongo, Meco, Timano and The Gaitana.
