In 1874, the contract for the construction of railway Antioquia and PTO starts the process of colonization; in 1904, established a commercial winery and settlers set their homes on the banks of the Magdalena River and its tributaries. They provided some of the wood that was used in the boilers of steamships.

In 1927, the colonizing process streamlines the entire region, the construction of the railway connecting the region with the capital of the Republic, Santa Marta and Medellin is completed. In 1957 a German company built the Colombo road Carare Opón - The Montoyas for logging, this same company donates heavy machinery and in conjunction with the Armenian Battalion Cisneros opens in 1963 crossing the road to Puerto Parra's Montoyas through a cooperative in the region.

Puerto Parra, who belonged to the municipality of Vélez, was incorporated as a township on March 4, 1981 by Ordinance 2080 and Decree 470 signed by the state governor, Dr. Alfonso Gomez Gomez. His name was named honoring the illustrious President Dr. Achilles santandereano Parra. In principle Puerto Parra belonged to the municipality of Vélez.
