The town began as indigenous reserve in 1596 The December 31, 1601 was founded by Alonso Dominguez Medellin on the civilian side and the church of Fray Juan Blas Redondo, to this date were drawn streets and races with a place to center.

Beginning in 1694 is given to the construction of the first structural church and convent which lasted approximately one hundred (100) years, the result is a stunning work in masonry, stone carving, wood and gold. The architecture of the church and convent, is a mixture of several styles including the Romance stands
