The Indians and the salt guacas territory Heliconia provided them much wealth to the Spanish, who quickly began to exploit. In the square immediately to Salinas, Don Bernardino Álvarez del Pino built the first chapel in the area.  During the colonial and nineteenth century ,  Heliconia was the largest producer of salt in Antioquia.

In 1814 the dictator Don Juan del Corral decreed the founding of the town of Heliconia , which until now existed with the name of Guaca because indigenous burials. The town was named "Heliconia San Rafael" . Although the then government wanted to create on the same date the municipality as such, could not be completed erection due to the War of Independence.

Erection occurred only in 1831 , by decree of Bishop Dr. Fray Mariano Garnica , with the name of San Rafael Parish of Heliconia. In1831 Heliconia borough was erected.

Even today, the glorious days of salt production are remembered by their inhabitants.
