Due to its strategic position the district had a gradual growth and thanks to the donation of the land now occupied by the town by Mr. José Ramón Bueno and Triana is founded the town named in honor of General Girardot Atanasio Girardot . With Ordinance 20 of 9 October 1852 in which reads "... Believe parish district Girardot name ... " The first mayor was called Claudio Clavijo district.  It is created in 1866 when the parish (reviewed by Cape Gazette No 407 of July 7, 1891), and its first parish priest Father José Marcelino Pardo.

The city began to develop through a path in checkerboard around the square of San Miguel where is the church of the same name, a vernacular architecture. It is recorded that the first hotel inthe city founded in response to the perceived need of shelter for the flow of travelers and merchants, was the Hotel Cisneros in 1884. Two years after this event mentions that the population was of 2,163 port inhabitants.Con the Thousand Days War refugees lot of liberal South and East of the Tolima were lodged on their land.

After completion of the civil war of the thousand days, the city of Girardot begins to progress, they begin to draw avenues, the business grows surprisingly and most neighborhoods begin to form.In 1903, through Bill 22, the parish district Girardot, became a provincial capital, made up of the municipalities of Girardot, Guayaquil, Jerusalem, Nariño, and Tocaima Nile.

The strategic position of the municipality in Girardot became one of the most important ports on the Magdalena river and the largest in the country's interior, where he passed all goods
