Cota was founded as a township by the hearer by Diego Gomez de Mena, 29 November 1604, being the encomendadora Doña María de Santiago. After this foundation was restocking in 1638 by Gabriel Carvajal, and again in 1670.



The 17 March 1873 by resolution of the honorable council, the transfer of the municipal seat for the initial site in the "Hacienda Santa Cruz" sorts, today village of old village, to the present site, then called "Tres Esquinas" for convenience so that the people were in the National road connecting to Zipaquirá with Girardot and it was
