In the course of its history became mother of heroes and revolutionaries leader’s direccionaron forces in the fight for freedom and for the just cause of the people. These characters are: José Antonio Galán , the leader most important and representative community member of this movement, who after being betrayed by his colleagues, was executed and quartered in Santa Fe on February 1, 1782; José Acevedo y Gómez , one leading member of the Governing Board created the night of July 20, 1810 in Santa Fe, who was called The Tribune of the People for inciting the insurgent crowd that day in the square not stop their revolt, so that the first independence of New Granada was achieved; and Antonia Santos , one of the most important revolutionary leaders of the region, who founded and sponsored militias who helped in the Liberty Campaign led by General Simon Bolivar , and who also was executed in the town of Socorro on July 28, 1819.

Charalá helped greatly with the Liberty Campaign militias and guerrillas who joined the army of the Liberator. But undoubtedly the most important and the fact that most influenced this county, was the Battle of the River Pienta. On August 4, 1819 was held in this county this battle, which pitted the Spanish troops under Colonel Lucas González (which would reinforce the army of José María Barreiro in Boyacá) and militias Charalá Encino, Ocamonte Stream Chisel, and other nearby towns. This battle lasted about three days, during which the Spanish troops took road through the village, pillaging and massacring the population, which was defended with sticks, stones, kitchen items, and any instrument that would serve them as a defense
