His erection town dates from 1814 . The Deputy Superintendent Dr. Lucio Villa issued a decree erecting the parish , the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary , on the site now occupied (said that was previously in a different beaches san jacinto today), formerly known as Petacas. On the same day, and the town gained a mandate from the government district category.

The mining was the determining factor of the initial economy, and well into the second half of the twentieth century , no data related to that in 1755 , at the Royal Mines of Our Lady of the Rosary of Petacas (today Belmira), 12 mines were exploited using 225 slaves . By the year 1890 there were about 13 operating mines, and more recently 15 of them.

Between 1930 and 1965 there was another kind of exploitation that flourished, that of coal and cascareo. When the mines were exhausted, the economy turned to what is today: dairy and agricultural
