Main towns in the region include Pale, Sokolac, and Han Pijesak. North of Sarajevo there are the so called "Romanija Mountains" or "Romanija Planina".
Historically gets the name from the Vlachs (Romanians), that practised pastorice in those mountains since the Middle Ages. Only in the XIX century disappeared the last of them, who are connected and related to the population of Serbia's Stari Vlah region.
The area is famous for the local music, originally created by the vlach shepperds.
Administratively the region is part of the Republika Sprska's region called: Region Sarajevo-Romanija
