Barbarossa Kheir Ed Dine with the help of which they inflicted the Spaniards a serious defeat at Mazaghran (August 1558 ). Mostaganem then passed under the rule of the Ottomans, it was enlarged and fortified by Kheir Ed Dine. Mostaganem becomes a rival of Oran Spanish , and sees its importance grow

Mostaganem and its region have been home to many Spanish Moors, who built many neighborhoods and villages and established large farms, trade with Spain (and before Al-Andalus ) was also very active . The arrival of these Andalusians expelled from Spain by the Reconquista , will give a big boost to agriculture and handicrafts  . In 1792 , the Ottomans are transferring part of the population of Oran city, which became the new capital of western Algeria after taking Spanish . Mostaganem is one of the cities of the pre-colonial era whose population exceeded 10 000 , on the eve of colonization, it was more important than Oran.

The city was held in 1830 by a garrison of a hundred Turks in the pay of France, headed the boss Ibrahim.It is suspected, wrongly, by General Desmichels , commander of Oran place since April 1833, betrayal or lack of authority. Fearing that the city falls into the hands of the Emir Abd el Kader , Desmichels decides to occupy himself, and July 28, 1833 a small expion of 1400 French soldiers entering. The inhabitants left free to go with their movable property, mostly choose the starting  . The French garrison installed in each of the highlights of the city, including the district Matemore.

In 1834 , the French allow the emir to send a consul in the city. By The treated deTafna , Emir leaves the city to the French  . In 1848, the town of Mostaganem is created with the Annexes Mazagran, and Ouréah Kharrouba. The Decree of 27 July 1848 in Mostaganem erected subprefecture
