Every year on April 20, thousands of people have gathered on the CU Boulder campus to smoke marijuana at and before 4:20 pm. The 2010 head count was officially between 8,000 and 15,000 with some discrepancy between the local papers and the University administrators (who have been thought to have been attempting to downplay the event). Eleven tickets were given out whereas the year before there was only two.
In 2012, the University administration closed the campus to the general public on Friday, April 20, as a means of preventing this event. The size of the 2012 gathering was greatly reduced as a result
