Virudhunagar is a marketing and service town for the surrounding places. Being the administrative headquarters of the district, the town has a lot of teritiary sector activities. Majority of the work force in Virudhunagar is employed in agriculture, mining, quarrying, live stocks, manufacturing industries, construction, trade & commerce and service. As of 2001, 93% of the main workforce was involved in services and 5.4% in industrial sectors. There is limited agricultural activity within the town limits. There are a set of oil mills and match industries located within the town limits. The major commercial activities are concentrated around Katchery Road, Pullalakottai Road and Main Bazaar. As of the 2001 census, the occupational pattern of Virudhunagar indicated increased concentration in teritiary sectors. The agricultural output of the town is limited to a few cultivators due to the lack of geographical and climatic conditions. All major nationalized banks such as State Bank of India, Indian Bank, Central Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and private banks like ICICI Bank, City Union Bank, Axis Bank have their branches in Virudhunagar. All these banks have their automated teller machines located in various parts of the town
