History of Montauban

Around the Benedictine Abbey of Montauriol founded in the ninth century is organized very early an agricultural village. The growing power of the Abbey led the population of Montauriol asking the foundation of a new city.

October 1144: The Count Alfonso Jordan founded Montauban. Designed on a geometric plan with streets laid out in straight lines leading to a central place, it can be considered the first medieval new towns of the South.
