captaincy etymology means Tiba, So and Sa devil worshiper name illustrious person. The discovery and conquest of the lands of this town took place in the year 1539 when Gonzalo Jiménez de eager to know the rich temple of the sun Quesada, penetrated into the Valley Iraca.

The December 19, 1778 the Viceroy Manuel Antonio Flores issued a decree founding the town of Tibasosa, naming an ideal mayor to govern and administer fairly. The new parish of Our Lady of the Rosary of Tibasosa choose to Don Jerónimo Bayonne for this purpose. In those days, people from distant lands settled in this town for its great weather, also came several distinguished families of Spanish origin. Witness to this are the still existing colonial two-story homes with elegant balconies.

Tibasosa acceded in 1781 to Comunero Movement Socorro and San Gil, first cry of independence. This army left the village to join the troops of General Don Juan Francisco Berbeo of Zipaquirá.

The population also Tibasosa coadyudó with enthusiasm for the cause of independence marking a great patriotism in the memorable day of Pantano de Vargas. In Tibasosa died Chincá Innocent great hero wounded in the Battle of Vargas and natural Arauca. The March 30, 1820 passed by the deliverer Tibasosa carrying destination Santa Rosa de Viterbo.
