According to tradition, the first settlers of the territory were Carib Indians who came down from the central mountains to fish and hunt. With the passage of time was born the village of Villa Elvira, which disappeared due to changes in the river, so that their inhabitants moved to the site now occupied; I initially had the name of San Juan and from 1860 appears under the jurisdiction of the District of Morales in the Department of Mompox.

Regidor, until 1995 belonged to the municipality of Morales. He was elevated to the category of municipality by Order 40 of the
