Niquinohomo is the birthplace of Augusto Sandino , the "general of free men." Since 23 August 2002 , is a National Historic Heritage and is twinned with the U.S. city of Providence (Rhode Island) .

Its name comes from chorotega and means 'valley of the warriors', is composed of the words nec: 'Warrior' and nahome: 'valley'
