You might want to go to Cozumel when the mercury dips where you live, but there are optimum months when the weather is glorious and the crowds smaller. September is a good choice, with low humidity and clear skies and, since school has started for northern visitors, the island is not as crowded. Late April and early May also is an ideal time--the humidity begins to climb at the end of the month and the crowds increase as schools let out for the summer.
