The city, participating in the Swahili culture , available from the XIII th  century a major port which it remains today in ruins.There are also tombs dating from 1399 until the XVII th  century . Its population exceeds 2,500 people aware of its power. It is possible that the inhabitants have been forced to leave the city after a raid Malindi or Mombasa to the XVI th  century . The nomadic tribe of Galla came from Somalia and occupied the city abandoned. The port was then abandoned for being rebuilt in 1920 .

Gedi has a medina coral, earth and plaster. There are naturally mosques, palaces and also strong. The houses were very complex for the time because it had bathrooms with basin flow. The city streets are perpendicular and had gutters.

The village currently houses a museum. Since 1948 , the city is the center of a national park, Kenya
