The entire region of western Antioquia , inside of which is Uramita, was inhabited since ancient times by indigenous communities of the ethnic group of Catíos . According to historian Dr. Jaime Antioquia Sierra Garcia, the name "Uramita" comes from "Urai" Clean therefore "Uramita", he said, is "clean soil" means small gourd Uramita Urama opposite meaning large gourd. .

In 1875 Julian Ruiz and his wife Adelaide Cobaleda founded a village revolving around the activities of mining in the areas of El Salado and the Rio Uramita.
