Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, the maximum existing indigenous authority in what is now Toluviejo, was the chief Tulúa, that this name originated from the tree "Ceiba Tulúa" by the sight of power, authority and grandeur. His dominion extended over the neighboring territories as Tolu, La Piche and Warsaw, governed respectively by his sons Tulúa the new, the Piche and Toad.

According to the Academy of History Department of Bolívar, since the seventeenth century, is considered Toluviejo Town or administrative political entity, its first Lord Mayor Mariano Alviz
