Sotaquirá was founded in 1582, is a prehistoric village, like sixty-six villages of the fifteen provinces of the Department of Boyacá. Initially it was a county of origin chibcha, which had no foundation diligence. In the sixteenth century it was set up as an Indian village or reductions, by joining the Repartimientos of Ocusa, Timiza and Soconsuca. The Indians gave him Sotairaes government justice.
