Initially the town was known as "Stop" and was inhabited by guanes indigenous and belonged to the province of Vélez , was founded by Pedro Antonio Flórez on November 3, 1780 and then the name of San José de Pare was adopted. The first mayors were chosen by justice council and council, was its first mayor Andrés Guio. El Libertador Simón Bolívar passed through this city on 29 September 1819 . In the year of 1857
