1870 - 1880 - Between 1870 and 1872, was founded the village of Bocas del Rosario. 1887 - 1908 - Puerto Wilches was elevated to municipality, a condition that could not keep its sparse population; but then recovered in 1908, when they were incorporated the villages of El Pedral, Montecristo, Bocas del Rosario, Vijagual and Choco.

1920 - It is important river port on the Magdalena River, together with the rail transportation conducive towards the great commercial activity Santanderes region and north-eastern region of the country.
