It is unclear history of the regions comprising the town of Montebello during the conquest and settlement . It is known that in those times Montebello lands were part of the parish of Sabaletas a mandatory stop on the route linking the provinces of Antioquia and Popayan .

Sabaletas turn, belonged to Santiago de Armas, and this in the province of Popayan , until 1756 , when Viceroy José Solís Folch de Cardona the annexed Antioquia .

The first Spanish conquistadors who touched these lands were men Marshal Jorge Robledo having exterminated all Indian families in their path.  The lands of Montebello were awarded from the governor of Popayan Juan de Borja, Jacinto Arboleda, one of his men.

Later in 1737 the territories were acquired by José Ubaldo Vasquez , who years later cede the neighbors Weapon.

It was a long time without this municipality acontecieran significant events in the history, until in 1843, when Juan de la Cruz Gómez Plata guided the destinies of the Diocese of Medellín , ordered that the church be moved to another location during a visit he practiced Sabaletas the parish. This order resulted in an argument between neighbors, which culminated in that many of them were in the place where today is the head of the municipality to achieve erection of a town.
