Names: The city has many nicknames given its explosive economic development, especially tourism , known from "Reservoir Peñol-Guatapé" , located on its territory and most of Colombia. Among the nicknames heard saying "Haven of Peace", "Heart of Eastern Antioquia", "Antioquia Inland Sea."

Today it is known primarily for two titles are: "tourist paradise of Antioquia" and "People of Sockets", the latter due to the colorful sockets found in the homes of its municipal head.

It is divided into the districts of La Piedra, the dreamer, Quebrada Arriba, La Peña, Los Naranjos, El Rosario and Santa Rita . It has road communication with the municipalities of Alexandria , San Rafael , San Carlos , Granada and El Peñol .

Origin of name: It was named after the chief Guatape .
