style="mso-bidi-font-style:italic">Jalapa ' , dominating indigenous to the mouth of the Magdalena River. Its discovery by the Spanish colonizers came in March 1533 when Pedro de Heredia found the settlement of Mocanás , Indians mixture Caribbean and indigenous to the area. Like other indigenous peoples, was given in encomium in 1600 to Nicholas De Barros and later to Peter De Barros, son. The indigenous people of the region offered no resistance to European colonizers, and this resulted in a coupling that would result in the creation of a livestock economy. Thanks to this background Galapa municipality is known as a creator of artisan baskets and masks that also has a large livestock population, and they are currently undertaking the construction of large-scale industrial zones in the township. 

The town itself was created by Act 37 of 1873
