History of Cuitiva

JuteVilla
the territory of Cuitiva   when the Spanish conquistadors arrived in 1550, they were commanded by a chief or captain (hence, Cuitiva   means captaincy or domains Woman Captain)   that tributary area of the Cacique of Suamox (Sogamoso)   and obeyed, in religious matters, the high priest of the Temple of the Sun

The first   church to teach Christian doctrine stood on the corner where now the chapel is Humilladero. The present parish church was built early last century and has a golden Camerin in size and miniature statue of the Virgin of Sorrows. The altar, the coffered ceilings and beautifully crafted boxes on the sides of our church are works of art brought by the Franciscans in the time of the Spanish colonization in the middle   1600s.
