The name of Boyacá comes from the word Muisca " Boiaca "meaning" Manta Region Real "or" Cacique Fencing ",  which is etymologically derived from the words boy(blanket) and ca (fencing).  This name department was given in 1821 by the Congress of Cucuta , in honor of the river where the bridge is where they fought the battle more decisive for the independence of Colombia (known Aboriginal Teatinos river or river in Boyacá Spanish name).  Before the Congress of Cucuta, the current jurisdiction of the department was part of the province of Tunja , receiving the same name as its capital city
